Car Organisation

Two kids and one long car trip means a neverending pile of tissues, baby wipes and colouring in books.  This is our attempt to keep the mess and the tantrums under control!

This basket sits between the kids two carseats.  In it we have tissues, wipes, drink bottles, pencils, travel case for Master O, and sticker/colouring in books.  I personally prefer a basket rather than the over seat organisers.  We have portable dvd players over the seat so it makes attaching organisers tricky.  I purposefully chose a basket with handles so it is easy to take out of the car when we are stopped or staying overnight somewhere.  This one was under $10 from a discount store.

If only I had of found this travel case years ago!  It is prefect for an older child to carry ipods, ds’s, headphones, pencils, notepad even a small toy or two.  Even better it has his favourite jet plane on the front.  It is from Smiggle and retails for $24.95.

Loving these $3 pencil tins from Kmart complete with sharpener in the lid!  Wish I would have bought more as they would be perfect stocking fillers or birthday party gifts!

 Little Miss A is obsessed with Stickers and I am hoping some of these will help pass the time on the long drive.   She cnat quite put them in the right spots yet but she just loves looking at the real life pictures.  These were reduced to $2 at Big W.

We can only hope all of this will make our two day drive bearable.  It may take more than a basket, I’m thinking panadol and a stiff drink?

What do you do to survive car trips with the kids?

  1. My kids are older so they bring their own bags with their own supplies but for Annabelle I use an over the seat organiser. Loving the little pencil tin with a sharpener. Will need to keep an eye out for those :)

  2. We have always stocked the behind the (front)seats pockets with activity and colouring books and mini doodle thingys (you know the ones you write on with the attached stylus and then slide to erase – cannot remember the name) – those are great fro older kids to play hangman and tic tac toe without endless paper

    other than that i always had a bag or basket with drinks, snacks, drawing supplies and games

    My best tip is to try a tray in their lap – we have used a baking tray when they were little which had a raised side to catch pens and because magnetic they could use scene magnets on the go! (also meant if they had to eat a meal in the car we had a tray to catch crumbs)

    When we go on long trips, we do rely a little on technology…ipods, DS games, dvd player etc. We also pack heaps of snacks, drink bottles, and a pillow pet to lean on. They usually bring along a book to read as well, and I’ve got some printable car games, such a bingo.

    I’ve been looking for a basket just like that {something with handles} for our car. Our boys are horrible at keeping the car tidy and I’ve tried over the seat things and they don’t work. Sammy can’t reach, drops things and then it’s ON!

    This looks perfect. (And OMG, I love that pencil case. I wonder if that have ‘boy’ ones}

    I have never thought to put a basket between the kids for all of their stuff. Great idea Larissa!!

  6. We have a basket too, ours fits in the void when the arm rest is down, which also has two cup holders. Ours has an etcha sketch, wipes, drinks, snacks, a soft toy and a blanket. The blanket came in very handy when on our last trip Miss M was car sick.
